Hotel Energy Benchmark – Energy Analysis Reference

Please Share Your Feedback
How Can We Improve This Article?

This document provides KPI benchmark tables for hotel energy performance. It can be used by an Energy AI or analyst to classify properties by performance ranking (A++ to G). The KPIs included are:

  • kWh per Room Night
  • kWh per Guest Night (same benchmark structure as occupied room proxy)
  • kWh per m² (floor area intensity)

1. KPI: kWh per Room Night (STR Segment Benchmarks)

2. KPI: kWh per Guest Night

In many datasets guest nights are not available, therefore occupied room nights are used as the operational proxy. The same benchmark thresholds can therefore be applied when classifying kWh per guest night.

4. Property Types Used in Benchmarking

Economy – budget hotels with minimal amenities
Midscale – standard hotels with limited F&B
Upper-midscale – business focused with moderate amenities
Upscale – full-service urban hotels with restaurants and meeting space
Luxury – high-end hotels with extensive amenities, spas, pools and large F&B operations

5. Ranking Logic for Energy AI

  1. Identify property type.
  2. Select KPI (kWh/room night, kWh/guest night, or kWh/m²).
  3. Compare observed value to threshold bands.
  4. Assign the first band whose threshold is greater than or equal to the observed value.
  5. If value exceeds the G threshold, classify as ‘> G’.
