What does the waterfall chart show?

The waterfall chart provides a visual overview of how revenue and operating costs contribute to gross operating profit (GOP).

The chart helps users understand:

  • Current month-to-date performance
  • Expected month-end performance
  • Whether the property is pacing toward forecast or budget goals
  • Which revenue and cost areas are driving results

The waterfall chart combines operational and financial data from PMI modules including:

  • Profit & loss report (GM daily digest)
  • Revenue & Productivity
  • Food cost cockpit
  • Labor cockpits

Understanding the waterfall chart

The chart is displayed from left to right and contains:

  • Revenue lines
  • Operating cost lines
  • GOP result

If GOP is negative, the GOP bar appears behind the zero point on the scale.

1. Month-to-date performance

The colored bars represent actual month-to-date performance.

Bar colors indicate pacing:

  • Green = on pace
  • Amber = near pace
  • Red = off pace

2. Month-end expectation

The grey bars represent the expected month-end result based on current live forecast values.

3. Pace to goal

The black dotted line shows where the property should be today to achieve the month-end goal.

The pace-to-goal value is calculated as:
Goal ÷ number of days in the month × number of days from the 1st of the month until today

Pace-to-goal and goal values are sourced from the P&L report.

4. Goal line

The black solid line represents the selected comparison target:

  • Forecast
  • Budget

For properties using PMI Planning, forecast values are based on the latest approved WiP forecast.

Revenue streams

The waterfall chart groups revenue into different revenue streams.

Depending on configuration, this may include:

  • Room revenue
  • F&B revenue
  • M&E revenue
  • Spa revenue
  • Other revenue

Hovering over a revenue line title displays a tooltip showing which departments are included in that revenue category.

Hovering over a revenue bar displays additional details about the displayed values, including:

  • Month-to-date (MTD) values
  • Live forecast values
  • Pace-to-goal values
  • Goal values

For the current month:

  • MTD and Live forecast values are sourced from Management Perspective
  • Pace-to-goal and Goal values are sourced from the P&L GM_DD report

Revenue categorization settings

Revenue streams can be configured from the GM daily digest settings (gear icon).

Departments can be mapped to the appropriate revenue category to ensure the waterfall chart reflects the operational structure of the property.

Operating cost lines

The waterfall chart also includes operating cost lines that help explain how operational expenses impact GOP performance.

Operating cost lines may include:

  • Labor cost
  • Food cost
  • Cost of sales
  • Other operational costs available in PMI

Hovering over an operating cost line or bar displays additional details about the displayed values and calculations.

The displayed operating costs depend on:

  • Available PMI data
  • Property configuration
  • GM daily digest settings
  • Whether the property uses PMI Planning

Labor cost calculation

Labor cost values are based on:

  • Labor hours
  • Cockpit hourly rates
  • Additional labor cost percentages when configured

If cockpit hourly rates already include all labor-related costs, no additional percentage is added.

If additional labor costs such as tax, pension, or social costs are not included in the hourly rate, an additional percentage can be configured in GM daily digest settings.

This setting affects labor cost calculations displayed in the waterfall chart.

Food cost calculation

Food cost values can be calculated using different data sources depending on GM daily digest settings.

Available sources include:

  • Food cost cockpit
  • P&L live forecast
  • Do not display food cost

The selected source affects:

  • Waterfall chart calculations
  • Food cost insights
  • Current and future month expectations

If ‘Do not display food cost’ is selected, food cost values are excluded from the waterfall chart and displayed as a solid grey bar.

Gross oper. profit

The bottom line of the Waterfall chart shows the property’s Gross operational profit. These values are sourced from the GOP section in the P&L GMDD report.

Properties with PMI Planning

For properties using PMI Planning, the waterfall chart combines data from:

  • Profit & Loss report
  • Revenue & Productivity
  • Food cost cockpit
  • Labor cockpits

Past months

Past month views use approved forecast or budget values from the P&L GMDD report together with finalized operational and financial results.

Current month

The current month view combines:

  • Actual month-to-date performance
  • Live forecast expectations
  • Pace-to-goal calculations
  • Goal (budget or forecast) from P&L report

Future months

Future month views are based on:

  • Live forecast expectations
  • Goal (budget or forecast) from P&L report

No month-to-date bars are shown because no actual results exist yet.

Properties without PMI Planning

Properties without PMI Planning have limited Profit & Loss data available in PMI.

Because of this:

  • Some cost lines may not appear
  • Waterfall information may be incomplete
  • Certain GOP calculations may not be available

Revenue, labor, and food cost data still use available operational sources in PMI.

Additional information

Tooltips are available throughout the waterfall chart and provide additional details about:

  • Revenue composition
  • Cost calculations
  • Included departments
  • Forecast and pacing values
